Brendan Ige

     Dr. Brendan Ige, a native of Pearl City, Hawaii, is Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium at Eastern Michigan University and Instructor of Brass at Adrian University and Madonna University. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from Bowling Green State University and his Master’s degrees (in Tuba Performance and Chamber Music) and DMA from University of Michigan. He performs on tuba and euphonium, composes, and teaches all brass instruments in the Michigan and Ohio area. His primary teachers include Fritz Kaenzig and David Saltzman.  

Widely sought after as a performer, composer, and clinician, Brendan has performed with ensembles such as Detroit Symphony, Toledo Symphony, Detroit Opera, Toledo Symphony Concert Band, Glimmerglass Opera, Adrian Symphony, Akron Symphony, Perrysburg Symphony, The Royal Hawaiian Band, and the Cedar Point Beach Band. He has also performed guest recitals or taught masterclasses at schools such as University of Michigan, Baldwin Wallace University, Kent State University, The University of Akron, Madonna University, Bowling Green State University, and Oakland University. 

     He has been an invited performer at the North American Saxophone Alliance as a tubist. He has also been a featured euphonium artist for the Dublin Silver Brass Band, played in euphonium sections featuring international soloists and members of the President’s own Marine Band, played as a guest soloist in front of jazz bands, and judged and chaired competitions around the country. His compositions have been featured in international competitions and have been performed around the world.

     Brendan is an avid proponent of contemporary music and has premiered, composed and commissioned numerous works. His chamber group Conviviality frequently performs his own compositions and seeks out other present-day composers to write for the group. Brendan teaches all levels of education from elementary to higher education, has served on the faculty of Oakland University as Assistant Director of Brass Band and Low Brass, and currently teaches in the Van Buren public school district as a sectional coach and private lessons teacher for students from 6th-12th grade. His compositions and method book, Good Lips: Warm-ups, Daily Routines, and Etudes for Brass Players, can be found published by Cimarron Music Press for trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, and tuba.

     As founder of the Tuba-Euphonium Social Justice Initiative (TESJI), Brendan has sought to bring representation and diversity to the forefront of his field. Numerous commissions, microgrants, events and conferences have been funded through TESJI to help highlight diversity in the music community. His four albums (where he is featured on tuba, euphonium, flugabone, trombone, voice, and as a composer) can be found on all major streaming platforms, ranging in genre from classical tuba to improvised music with electronics. His current project is an album in progress as a collaboration with world-renowned tuba virtuoso, Patrick Sheridan.
